Karloff Frankenstein

The Golden Age of Universal horror launched in 1931 with two films, Dracula and James Whale's adaptation of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein.

The Frankenstein Monster is arguable the most iconic figure in all the Universal Monster movies and has since become a symbol for the entire series. While the creature had been put on screen at least once before in an outlandish, golem-like makeup for Thomas Edison, no one had ever seen anything like the ghoulish, strangely pitiable monstrosity put together by Whale and makeup artist Jack Pierce and brought to life by Boris Karloff's horribly soulful performance.
